How do we know all life evolved from a single ancestor?

I keep hearing that all life on earth evolved form a single ancestor, how do we know this is true? Couldn't some creatures, like the ones living near volcanic vents on the bottom of the ocean have evolved independently from another ancestor??? Why can't new life come about spontaneously more than once?
